Severn Estuary from Walton Common

Our next Bristol Insight Sangha Walk with be a circular walk around Clevedon led by Alistair Willis on Sunday 15th September. Here is Alistair’s outline of the walk:

The walk starts at the north end of The Avenue in Clevedon. This is a wide residential street and there is plenty of space for parking. It then heads north east up towards the golf course and Walton Castle, crosses the golf course, and meanders through peaceful woodland for about half a mile to St Paul’s Church at Walton-in-Gordano. We pass up through the village and there is a steep but fairly short climb up a woodland path to Walton CommonThere is a nature reserve here and also some prehistoric earthworks. There is a choice of routes across the common, but at the end, we turn north west and head up a country lane towards the coast. The route crosses Down Road here and then there is quite a steep descent over a field to the coast path. We then head south west and all along the coast path to Ladye Bay. The coast path is narrow most of the way, but there are wonderful views over the estuary towards Wales and some (quite rocky) places to take a break. From here it is about 15 minutes back to the parking spot up Bay Road and Channel Road.

The whole route is about 4-5 miles – about two and half hours at a leisurely amble.

Meet at St Andrews Park at 10.15am to share lifts, or at the start of the walk at 11am. We will finish by around 1pm in time for lunch. Let me know if you would like to come on the walk and whether you would like or can offer a lift from Bristol.

HEALTH AND SAFETY – PLEASE READ

Every Bristol Insight activity is required to have a Health & Safety policy, partly for insurance purposes. Walkers are asked to abide by the following guidelines:
Please wear/bring clothing that is appropriate for the conditions and weather, for example: walking boots; waterproof (and ideally windproof) clothing; drinking water/tea; something to sit on for lunch/tea breaks; snacks; sun cream if the weather requires it; sunglasses.
Children and dogs are the responsibility of their parent(s)/guardian/owner and are not covered by BI insurance. Please be prepared to keep your dog on a lead if necessary (in certain nature reserves, or if livestock are in fields). The walk leader will carry a basic first aid kit.
The walk leader will give an advance assessment of the difficulty and conditions on the walk and will advise if any special precautions are needed. It is up to parents to assess whether the walk is within the capacity of any children. Walks are at a slow/gentle pace – we walk at the pace of the slowest person, and have frequent pauses in walking, so that no one feels pressurised to keep up.

With warm wishes,
Gordon
