Sangha Walk – Sugarloaf Mountain, Black Mountains, Wales
Saturday 29th October, 2022

Ascending Sugarloaf – Sangha Walk – March 2009 (Photo by Steve Onyett)

A 51/2 mile moderate circular walk with outstanding views and a sense of open space that includes an ascent of Sugarloaf, one of the most famous and distinctive peaks of the Black Mountains.
A gentle ascent through oak woodlands gives way to a splendid gorse covered ridge. The approach to the summit makes use of a spiral pathway that enables a more gradual ascent and gives excellent all round views. The return from the summit is a steady gradual downhill walk back to the car park. The actual walk should take about 3 hours at a gentle pace, with a stop for picnic lunch at the top of Sugarloaf (if the weather is conducive).

Meet at 10am on Saturday morning at the top entrance of St. Andrews Park (by the toilets) to share lifts, or join us at 11.15am at the car park near Sugarloaf (click here for map link – the car park is at the bottom of the lane leading up to The Old Barn). The drive from Bristol takes just over 1 hour.

Bring a packed lunch and we will have a lunch stop during the walk. We will do part of the walk (about 30-40 minutes) in silence. We could have optional afternoon tea (or wine-tasting) at Sugarloaf Vineyards after the walk.
Friends, family, children and dogs are welcome on the walk. Please let Gordon know in advance, by Friday 28th at the latest, if you are coming on the walk, and whether you are able to offer a lift, or would like a lift.

We did variations of this walk in 2009, 2015 and 2018 – the photo above is from the 2009 walk.
